Short Summary

Paranormal Activity Next Of Kin: Margot (Emily Bader) discovers she has a living family member in PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: NEXT OF KIN and decides to make a documentary about meeting him. She hires Chris (Roland Buck III) as her cameraman, and he hires Dale (Dan Lippert) to record the sound. Margot's relative, Samuel (Henry Ayers-Brown), turns out to be Amish, so the trio travels to the countryside to stay at Samuel's family home and possibly learn more about Margot's mother and her past. It isn't long before creepy things begin to occur, beginning with noises in the upstairs room and a small girl saying, "she's still here." However, things are about to get much, much darker.

There is no connection with paranormal franchise sequel movies after watching this film. Despite the presence of a horror scene, this film fails to entertain its audience.

Paranormal Activity Next of Kin explained

Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" became one of the most successful independent horror films of all time in 2007. It was effective in part because of its relatable simplicity, telling the story of a haunting through cameras set up in an otherwise mundane suburban home. It was made for almost nothing. The franchise it spawned spiralled out of control, filling in the background of the original couple in ways that never seemed as effective as the pure scares of the first film. . It ended in a flop with the sixth instalment, "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension," in 2015. Of course, nothing ever dies in the horror business, and today marks the release of "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin" by Paramount+, a film that is only loosely related to the first film.

Emily Bader stars as Margot, a young woman who recently discovered she was abandoned by a member of an Amish community and has decided to return to it with a boyfriend, sound guy, and camera to make a documentary about her past. What was her mother's name? Why did she abandon her? Why are those who knew her mother so afraid to speak about her? Yes, "Next of Kin" feels a little too much like "Scary Amish People" for too long as Margot and her friends stare wide-eyed at the world around them. A scene in which they are overjoyed to see pigs (gasp) feels almost parodic.

But, of course, there's more to this Amish community than dairy farming and a total lack of Wi-Fi. Margot discovers that her mother lived in the room above the one she is currently in, which results in some unsettling sounds coming from there in the middle of the night. The best scene in the first hour of the film is when Margot investigates and discovers a hidden door lit only by the type of night camerawork seen in the still above. It's the only scene that recalls the original's creepy effectiveness, with the viewer's eyes darting around the frame, looking for something terrifying before it jumps out.

"Next of Kin" is barely a found footage film for the most part. Listen, I'm not trying to be too harsh on an often-malleable form, but one of the advantages of found footage films is that they lock us into a POV, forcing us to see a limited frame of action. There are scenes in William Eubank's film that have coverage, shot from various angles as if Margot had a crew with her. Because it's so inconsistent and rarely used well, it almost feels like the script was written in traditional form and then crammed into the "PA" found footage style. Something about a found footage horror film isn't working when you're wondering who's holding the camera.

Paranormal Activity Next of Kin Movie Ending explained

To be fair, the final act does go off the rails in an enjoyable way that I admired. As things get truly terrifying for Margot in the final 20 minutes, and it starts to feel more like a "Resident Evil" movie than a "Paranormal Activity" one, Eubank finally gets to unleash some of the visual chaos that made his "Underwater" memorable. To be honest, if you asked people when it was over whether it was a "RE" sequel or a "PA" sequel, they'd probably be confused.
