Following the shocking ending to The Last of Us second episode, in which Tess sacrificed her life to save Joel and Ellie, it appears that the tutorial section of the new HBO series' video game adaptation has been completed. We know how the infected work, and the map of the series world is available for exploration. That's a good thing, because our hero Joel will assist Ellie in reaching the Firefly oasis, which They believe is still out there, still searching for a cure for this infection. This episode is longest run time compare to episode 1 and episode 2.
Beginning the episode, Joel and Ellie are now 10 miles west of Boston, as determined by a very helpful location stamp at the beginning of the third episode, and they must continue their journey without Tess, which will be difficult for them. "I was thinking about what happened, and nobody forced you to agree to this plan," Ellie says to Joel. "You needed a truck battery or something, and you chose. So don't blame me for something that isn't my fault." Yeah Joel, remember when you thought this was just a side quest to find your brother's car battery? So, welcome to the main game. Finally, the main show began.
While walking through, they discovered an abandoned convenience store. Inside, they begin searching, and Ellie discovers an infected guy underground room who is still alive and crushed beneath heavy concrete. Ellie killed infected because he makes those strange, velociraptor-like noises that infected humans make in this world.
Then Joel and Ellie discover something even worse: a mass grave of people who the army refused to let enter a quarantine zone because they were either infected or the QZ was too full. Apparently, the soldiers would simply execute these people in mass executions to prevent them from turning. We saw a survivor Bill who was still living in town in 2003. Bill emerges from a secret bunker he built beneath his house, stocked with guns, barrels of sulfuric acid, and a stack of security camera feeds. He steals oil from the gas station, a massive amount of supplies from Home Depot, and even jacks his neighbor's boat.
Then he sets up a slew of booby traps and watches them go to work on some unfortunate infected humans while eating his dinner. "It never gets old," he tells himself. Whenever anyone entered his nearby area, he was alerted by a device, and he could see them through cctv and a trap he built worked very well, making entry into his area difficult.
Bill has been living in his house fortress town for nearly four years, until another person named Frank from the Baltimore QZ falls into one of his traps, a deep hole-like well. Bills came out of his house to kill Frank because he believes he is infected. Frank informs him that he is not infected and that the quarantine zone has been removed, and Bill lets him out of a hole after testing to ensure that he is not infected. Bills told him to leave and go, but Frank stated that he has been hungry for several days. Bill reluctantly lets him in and offers him a shower, new clothes, and a home-cooked meal. Bills' food is delicious, according to Frank. He expresses his gratitude by playing a song on the piano... but he's not very good. Bill humiliates him by playing Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time" before confessing to Frank that he is gay. The good news is that Frank says, "I know," and the two cry as they kiss. They both began living together.
They live together for another three years before he begins to feel truly isolated by their living situation. He wants to clean up the town and play Sims in real life, but Bill warns him that "we will never have friends, because there are no friends to be had." Cut to Joel and Tess eating dinner outside with them. It's only been about seven years since we flashed back to 2003, so I'm assuming this scene takes place in 2010—still more than a decade before our current journey with Joel and Ellie.
Tess thanks the couple for the delicious meal, but Bill is not pleased. Joel discusses a trading offer, in which both parties can exchange goods for trading. They exchange a gun for strawberry seeds. Later, Frank and Bill eat strawberries and laugh. "I was never afraid before you came," Bill says to Frank. Oh my goodness, you two! Love?! During the end-of-the-world? This was one of the episode's most heartfelt moments.
The couple grows old together in their small town, until Frank becomes ill. He plans one final day with Bill, and it's set to the incredibly recognizable "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter. It has been used extensively in films such as Arrival, Stranger Than Fiction, Shutter Island, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and many others. Why? Because it is extremely beneficial to the tear ducts. Bill also cry in deep and decide to end of life with Frank. Frank and Bill crush enough sleeping pills to end their lives together and then go to bed for the last time.

When Joel and Ellie finally arrive in the present day (August 2023), they discover a key and a hand-written note in Bill's house. "I used to hate the world and I was happy when everyone died, but I was wrong because there was one person worth saving," Bill wrote. That is why men like you and me exist. We have a mission to complete, and God help any motherfuckers who get in our way."
Joel finally takes a moment for himself outside as the weight of three significant losses in his life bears down on him. They took short break to refresh for next journey. Finding Bill's car in the garage, he prepares to go in search of his brother Tommy once more. Joel mentions that Tommy was a former Firefly, so he might know where this doctor outpost is. I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest that they could just stay here forever and be safe, but I know that's not an option for these two. Despite the fact that the town Bill built kept two people safe for nearly two decades.
Well, it's time to hit the road; hopefully, the next episode will feature more action fighting.
